The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) is requesting the Canadian government to approve a legislative proposal that would make wagering on individual sporting events legal.
BCLC is strongly advocating for the passage of the Single Event Betting Amendment, which was presented in the House of Commons in Canada in November of 2022. This amendment aims to alter section 207(4)(b) of the Criminal Code to permit betting on solitary sporting or athletic events.
The proposed legislation seeks to change the current law, which presently only allows consumers to place wagers on a minimum of three games or more. This means that placing a bet on a single game or event is currently prohibited.
In recent times, there has been a growing movement in favor of legalizing single-game betting. Both BCLC and media company Score Media and Gaming (theScore) have voiced their support for legalizing this form of wagering.
“Our patrons have been expressing a strong desire to participate in single-game sports betting,” stated Stewart Groumoutis, BCLC’s director of eGaming. “For instance, this weekend is the Super Bowl, and our patrons wish to be able to simply wager on the victor, but under the current legislation, they are unable to do so.”
