**B**etgenius’ Director of Business Development, Matt Stephenson, shares his expertise on the burgeoning esports betting sector.

**Reflecting on your ten years at Betgenius, how has the organization progressed?**

Stephenson reminisces, “We were a minuscule entity when I began, a mere 10 or 12 individuals squeezed into a cramped office near London Bridge. Today, we boast a global footprint with offices around the world and a London headquarters team exceeding 150 strong. Our offerings have undergone a dramatic metamorphosis as well. We’ve transitioned from a relatively obscure odds comparison platform to a multifaceted enterprise providing advertising services, lottery solutions, marketing and trading software for bookmakers, and integrity services for sports governing organizations. It’s been a thrilling and gratifying journey, yet the fundamental tenets of the business have remained steadfast.”

**Could you elaborate on your current position within the company?**

“My principal concentration lies in business development for our sportsbook management product. We furnish software and managed services to bookmakers, essentially streamlining their trading operations. While I previously oversaw the sales team, my present role centers around catering to substantial, pivotal accounts and talent acquisition.”

**From your perspective, what are some of the significant transformations you’ve witnessed in the sports betting industry over the last several years?**

“A prominent trend in the past decade has been the migration from pre-match wagering to live, in-game betting.

The realm of wagering is undergoing a swift transformation, most notably in the surge of live betting. A mere ten years ago, oddsmakers may have presented real-time odds on 500 contests monthly. Currently, that figure surpasses 6,000, propelled primarily by the worldwide fervor for football. Tennis has experienced a comparable boom in live betting, and now basketball is on a parallel course. This year alone, live odds will be available on over 30,000 basketball matches.

For technology firms like Betgenius, maintaining a leading edge is paramount. It’s not simply about fulfilling the desires of present-day gamblers but also predicting their wants six months or even a year into the future. This is why esports has been a focus for the past 12 months. There’s a substantial prospect to embed within the value chain and assist esports in achieving its complete economic capacity, particularly regarding live betting.

However, what about esports has captivated the wagering sector’s interest?

The preceding year has been an accelerated education in esports, comprehending the game mechanics, player preferences, and how it all connects to sports wagering. Discussions with CEOs and trading heads at prominent global betting enterprises have centered around the intricacies of live esports betting. And when mentioning 6,000 yearly events, ideally scheduled for betting demographics in the UK and Europe, that’s when genuine intrigue becomes apparent.

Competitive gaming wagering is a sizzling new sector, and with good reason. We’re discussing a cohort of young, digitally adept individuals with spending power ripe for the taking. These aren’t merely players; they’re enthusiasts. They tune into competitions, track their beloved squads and competitors, purchase merchandise – their fervor rivals any conventional sports devotee. Provide them with an enticing incentive to wager, and they undoubtedly will.

Although the United States, China, and Korea boast enormous player populations, their existing gaming laws make them challenging markets to penetrate. Conversely, Europe, particularly the East, alongside Australia and South America, are witnessing a surge. We’re referring to devoted aficionados who are propelling unprecedented profits for the sector.

Therefore, how can wagering enterprises leverage this? It hinges on a superior offering. Present a wide array of pre-game and live betting choices. Collaborate with specialized providers like Betgenius or recruit seasoned esports analysts. This goes beyond simply displaying odds on a monitor; it’s about grasping the intricacies of the games and the supporters who adore them.

Our alliance with Sky Betting has been incredibly fruitful. Apart from Betfair, we’ve also secured agreements with Codere in Spain and Danske Spil in Denmark. We have six additional integrations in progress as we speak. While the outlook is optimistic, this aspect of the business is still nascent and somewhat unpredictable. It’s not a matter of simply connecting it and observing the magic unfold. We must collaborate closely with our customers to guarantee the front-end encounter and integration are flawless. That being said, for wagering companies, being the first to enter the market is paramount.

Approximately 90% of the income we’ve generated thus far has originated from esports wagering within games.

What are your intentions for propelling the esports sector forward?

Our current offering is distinctive, which constitutes a significant asset for us. The objective now is to further broaden our scope. We’re actively exploring supplementary esports titles, expanding our reach, and providing more inventive market categories. We’ve been on a global tour, engaging with the leading figures in wagering and lottery operations, showcasing our achievements.”
